Validation of a virtual reality tool for learning orotracheal intubation

Clinical simulation is a necessary technique for medical professionals to acquire skills. Until now, mannequins representing human anatomy have been used, but recently, the development of virtual reality has become another tool for the training of future doctors.The aim of this study is the validation by medical professionals of a virtual reality tool developed in collaboration between the University of Jaime I of Castellon and the Vega Baja Hospital of Orihuela. The tool was developed taking into account the recommendations of primary care and emergency physicians in our department regarding orotracheal intubation.A randomized group of physicians was selected to test an orotracheal intubation tool using virtual reality. The selected group consisted of physicians with the relevant speciality and clinical experience. Surveys were administered before and after using the tool to asses their level of satisfaction.Primary care and emergency medicine physicians rated the virtual reality tool favorably. Emergency medicine physicians identified more elements or details that could be developed or improved than primary care physicians.The mannequins currently used for orotracheal intubation require a monitor to supervise each step of the intubation process, and also require all the necessary intubation equipment. Virtual reality provides all the elements for intubation and for learning how to perform it, without the need for a monitor to supervise the process.Virtual reality and its role in simulation processes for acquiring technical skills will gradually become the norm. It saves time, allows for repeated practice, and reduces the need for teaching staff. Currently, haptic gloves are too expensive, but with technological advancements, their availability will become more accessible in a few years.
