Raazesvary VENOUGOBALOU, Leïla BOUZLAFA and Fanny HUYARD

Mindfulness is used for therapeutic purposes through MBSR programs. They might be quite difficult to organize. An alternative has emerged: the practice of mindfulness through digital media. The main objective of this study is describing and analyzing the motivations and expectations of general medicine patients, using any application enabling the practice of mindfulness via audio, podcast and/or video. This qualitative study is inspired by the grounded theory method. 14 interviews were conducted in 2025, in person, by phone or videoconference. This study followed the COREQ grid criteria. This study identified various motivations to start mindfulness practice through digital tools such as an outside opinion, media, psychological or somatic diseases. Learning this practice follows a complex cycle. There are expectations about these digital tools, concerning personalization and practicality. By exercising, patients relieve their symptoms on their own and manage their daily emotions more easily. The most convinced ones will seek to share this practice with others. The role of general practitioners could be to guide patients in their use, prioritizing free and accessible tools. Eventually, the development of mental health apps supported by the national health insurance could be a reliable alternative. In conclusion, these digital mindfulness tools are already used by patients for self-medication purposes.
