Triglyceride–Glucose Index as a Potential Indicator of Metabolic Syndrome

Triglyceride–Glucose Index, a simple proxy of Metabolic SyndromeThe triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index has recently been proposed as a surrogate marker of metabolic syndrome risk, but its association with individual metabolic risk components has not been clearly established. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the TyG index and various metabolic risk variables in a representative sample of the Korean general population.We analyzed data from 6,614 participants (mean age, 46.7 ± 22.5 years; mean BMI, 23.3 ± 4.2 kg/m²; 54.3% female) from the 2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Sociodemographic data (height, weight, neck circumference) and cardiometabolic parameters (waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting insulin) were collected. Pearson’s correlation analyses were performed using SPSS for Windows (version 18.0; IL, USA). Two-sided p values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.The TyG index showed a strong positive correlation with the HOMA-IR index, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and white blood cell count after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol (p < 0.001).. Further controlled clinical studies are warranted to confirm these findings and clarify the underlying mechanisms.The triglyceride–glucose index may serve as a significant and practical marker of metabolic syndrome in the general population.
