Transforming Rural Healthcare: An Evidence-Based Review of Artificial Intelligence Applications in Telemedicine

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in telemedicine has the potential to significantly improve healthcare access and quality in rural areas, where resources and medical personnel are often limited. Despite advancements, there remains a need for systematic reviews to assess the efficacy and challenges of these technologies in such settings.This evidence-based review aims to evaluate the current state of AI integration in rural telemedicine, focusing on its effectiveness in improving patient outcomes and accessibility while identifying barriers to implementation.A comprehensive literature search was conducted across databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, using keywords such as "AI," "telemedicine," "rural healthcare," and "evidence-based review." Inclusion criteria encompassed studies published from 2015 to 2023 that focused on AI applications in rural telemedicine. Exclusion criteria eliminated studies not available in English, review articles, and that did not report empirical data. The analysis involved qualitative synthesis of the selected studies, with attention to both quantitative findings and thematic insights.The review identified 25 relevant studies, of which 18 demonstrated significant improvements in diagnostic accuracy and patient satisfaction through AI-enhanced telemedicine platforms. Specifically, AI applications led to a 25% reduction in misdiagnosis rates and a 30% increase in patients’ adherence to treatment recommendations. However, barriers such as inadequate internet infrastructure and healthcare provider training were consistently noted, impacting the widespread adoption of these technologies.The findings underscore the dual role of AI as both a facilitator of enhanced healthcare delivery and a challenge due to infrastructural limitations in rural settings. While AI shows promise in improving care, the disparities in technology access must be addressed to realize its full potential.This review highlights the implications of AI in telemedicine for rural healthcare, advocating for targeted investments in technology infrastructure and training programs. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to further assess the long-term impacts of AI on health outcomes in these communities, emphasizing collaborative efforts among stakeholders to mitigate barriers.
