The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Smoking and Nicotine Dependence Levels in Family Medicine Residency Students

It is evident that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all segments of society in many ways since its declaration.In this study, it was aimed to evaluate whether there is a change in the level of smoking and nicotine addiction of family medicine specialty students who encountered various risk factors in their working environment during the COVID-19 pandemic and to evaluate the related factors.In the research, an online questionnaire was applied to family medicine specialty students working throughout the province of Izmir between 01/04/2023 and 31/05/2023. 201 of the 405 people reached in total agreed to participate in the study and completed the questionnaires. In the first part of the questionnaire, questions were asked about sociodemographic information, workplaces during the COVID-19 pandemic and smoking behaviors. The second part included the Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test.The mean age of 201 participants who participated in the study was 29.6±3.6 (min: 23, max: 51), 65.7% were female. The number of participants actively working in at least one place during the COVID19 pandemic was 91.5% and 29.4% smokers. 5.0% of the participants increased smoking during the pandemic. To the question of what will be your smoking status if the COVID-19 pandemic process is repeated, 8 participants (4.0%) said “I smoke, I can increase it”, 31 participants said (15.4%) “I smoke, my count does not change” and 13 participants said (6.5%) “ I smoke, I can quit”. The FNBT scores of the participants who did not have COVID19 infection were statistically higher than those who had COVID-19 infection (p=0.023).Approximately 30% of family medicine specialty students that they smoked during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the risks in the pandemic process are known, there has not been an expected decrease in smoking behavior, but a slight increase has been detected. The factors affecting this situation should be carefully evaluated.Smoking cessation activities should be individualized and necessary psycho-social support should be provided. Studies that give importance to the wellbeing of physicians, who guide the society and are also a part of the society, should be increased in order for the society to adopt healthy lifestyles.
