Returning to clinical practice after maternity leave is a major professional transition for many doctors. Through informal professional conversations across multiple NHS specialties—including General Practice, hospital medicine and community-based roles—recurring challenges have emerged relating to confidence, workload, identity, and workplace culture. Understanding how these NHS-wide themes manifest uniquely in General Practice is increasingly important for workforce retention, wellbeing and training quality.
