Spin, Steer, Empower: Integrating the Spider Web and Lifestyle Compass in GP Practice

Primary care consultations often focus on disease management, leaving limited time for broader well-being. The Positive Health framework, visualized through the “spider web,” and the Lifestyle Wheel (“Leefstijlroer”) offer practical tools to shift conversations toward resilience, meaningfulness, and self-management. This workshop introduces these concepts and demonstrates how they can be integrated into routine consultations to empower patients.Participants will:<br> • Become familiar with the core principles of Positive Health and the spider web tool.<br> • Practice asking domain-focused, empowering questions.<br> • Explore the Lifestyle Wheel as a structure for lifestyle change.<br> • Develop skills to support patient-led goal setting.Teaching methods<br> The workshop will combine a short presentation, small-group case discussions, role-play exercises, and guided reflection. Active participation is encouraged to build confidence and transferable skills. Workshop schedule (60 minutes)<br> • Introduction & theory overview (10 min)<br> • Case presentation and spider web domain questioning practice (20 min)<br> • Introduction to the Lifestyle Wheel (10 min)<br> • Role-play: facilitating patient-led lifestyle change (15 min)<br> • Reflection & key takeaways (5 min)Participants will gain practical experience applying Positive Health tools in consultations, feel more confident in exploring multiple life domains with patients, and be able to facilitate lifestyle change conversations in a patient-centered manner.This workshop provides a concise, hands-on introduction to Positive Health and the Lifestyle Wheel, equipping clinicians with tools to promote patient ownership and holistic care in daily practice.
