Speaking up – your chance to understand and expand how WONCA makes policies that work for family medicine.
Amanda HOWE, Sankha RANDENIKUMARA and Mariano GRANERO
All family doctors sooner or later have to make a policy – a “statement of principles designed to guide decisions, and lead to actions to achieve relevant outcomes”. We rely on WONCA and Member Organisation leaders to do this at a national and international level, and have some excellent examples. But it is only recently that WONCA has begun to bring these together, to share them across our community, and help us all learn how to adapt these for our own needs and useAt this workshop we shall share the latest findings from a global WONCA survey of what we already have: why these documents were created; who they are aimed at; what we know about their impact; and how we can use them more effectively and widely. We shall also do a presentation on what we know about writing and using policies effectively to advocate within our own contexts and settings. Attendees will be able to experiment with examples to share best practice, and ask questions / give feedback.5 minutes welcome and introductions 5 minutes; presentation of project findings and documents 10 minutes; presentation of workshop activities – with slides sharing exemplar documents and key questions about value and use 15 minutes – small group exercises 5 minutes – feedback 5 minutes – summary, next steps, and resource sharing.Attendees will leave with both more awareness of what WONCA already can provide (policy access, policy and advocacy skill toolkit) and how they can use it for their own needs. We shall also feed any queries arising into our future briefings for members.. This is part of the ongoing and widely supported work of the SIGPA, and uses the findings of our recent project as the evidence for the work shared. The workshop will also allow people to join the SIG, participate in a future analysis of policy needs and production, and findings will be fed into WONCA's ongoing priorities to assist members.
