Overdiagnosis means making people unnecessarily into patients. Overdiagnosis is a global problem and is happening when diagnosing mental conditions as well as somatic conditions. To an individual, being overdiagnosed often triggers a cascade of psychosocial harm and overtreatment. In a societal context, overdiagnosis is extremely costly and harmful to public health. To general practitioners, overdiagnosis means more work, increased social inequity, and to some extent work that increases the inverse care law.By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Define overdiagnosis and recognize its manifestations in primary care. 2. Describe the individual, societal, and professional harms associated with overdiagnosis and overtreatment. 3. Critically appraise recent evidence and international guidelines for selected topics. 4. Reflect on their own clinical experiences and identify strategies to reduce unnecessary diagnoses and medicalisation in general practice.The symposium will begin with 5 short presentations (5 mins each – total 25 mins): •             What is overdiagnosis •             Harms of overdiagnosis •             Low-dose CT for smokes: what is the overdiagnosis cost? •             Mammography – 40 or 50? new USPSTF guideline •             The emotional cost of screening tests – anxiety about results •             HRT – what is the right balance? (optional) followed up by discussions in small groups (guided by a question on each of the above topics) (20 min) ending with a plenum discussion (15 mins).Participants are expected to gain a clearer understanding of the drivers and consequences of overdiagnosis, increased confidence in discussing uncertainty and harms with patients, and practical ideas for resisting “too much medicine” in everyday clinical practice. The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to engage in international dialogue on overdiagnosis, exchange ideas and perspectives with colleagues from different countries, and gain deeper insight into selected key issues in the field.Drawing on Jønsson and Brodersen’s award-winning book Soon we will all be patients (2022) and highlights from recent EUROPREV conferences, this symposium addresses overdiagnosis as a central challenge for contemporary general practice. By combining evidence, theory, and clinicians’ experiences, the workshop aims to support GPs in counteracting unnecessary diagnoses, overtreatment, and the overmedicalisation of life.
