Serendipity—the art of finding what one is not seeking—has played a pivotal role in many medical breakthroughs, from Fleming’s discovery of penicillin to Pepys’ work on C-reactive protein and amyloidosis. This workshop explores how serendipity can be actively embedded within the EBM process to enhance creativity and innovation in general practice.1. Define serendipity and its historical impact on medical discoveries. 2. Explore how serendipity can enhance clinical practice, research, and education. 3. Develop practical strategies to cultivate curiosity and openness in daily practice.Interactive discussions, case studies (e.g., penicillin, CRP, mustard gas), and group exercises to identify serendipitous opportunities in clinical scenarios. Participants will share personal experiences and practice brainstorming techniques to apply these principles in their work. – Introduction (10 min): Definition and relevance of serendipity, and its place in EBM workflows. – Historical examples: Key discoveries (Fleming, Pepys, etc.) and participant-shared personal stories (15 min) – Practical workshop (20 min): Group exercises to apply serendipity in practice. – Debrief and conclusions (15 min): Sharing insights and actionable takeaways.Participants will: – Recognize serendipity as a valuable tool in medicine. – Develop strategies to integrate curiosity and openness into their practice. – Leave with concrete ideas to apply serendipity in research, education, and patient care.Serendipity is not mere chance but a mindset that can be cultivated.
