Primary care teams across Europe are adapting to increasing complexity and workforce shortages. This evolution calls for new roles for non-physician professionals, such as nurses, to strengthen continuity and patient-centered care. Implementing these roles requires evidence-based strategies and practical tools. This workshop brings together insights from three research projects that explore how role transformation can be successfully achieved in general practice.Understand diverse approaches to introducing new roles for non-physicians in primary care teams. Identify barriers and enablers for sustainable role integration. Apply a practical tool to assess readiness for change in participants’ own context. The session combines concise presentations with interactive exercises. Each presenter will share findings from their project, followed by group work using a validated tool to reflect on applicability in different settings. Introduction (5 min): Overview of role transformation in primary care and get to know each other. Three presentations (25 min): JACARDI: Pilot project part of European Joint Action, based on theory, literature review and needs-focused interviews. Practice-based workshops where GPs and nurses co-create clinical protocols, clarifying responsibilities and embedding new roles in daily routines. COOPERATE: Longitudinal research tracking how nurse roles evolve over time, revealing patterns of task redistribution and team adaptation. START2VIHP provides a structured five-step approach — consider, search, recruit, start, grow — to help practices integrate a nurse into their team effectively and sustainably. It offers practical tools such as onboarding guides and the Quick Scan to assess readiness for change. Exercise (10 min): Participants will map emerging roles in their own context, and practice with the START2VIHP Quick Scan. Interactive discussion (20 min): Together with the participants, we will discuss which lessons are transferable to other countries and for other roles and professions.Participants will gain evidence-based insights and practical tools to guide role transformation in primary care, leaving with actionable strategies tailored to their own practice environment.Redefining roles for non-physician professionals is essential for sustainable primary care. By combining research findings with hands-on exercises, this workshop empowers teams to embrace change effectively.
