Rapid primary-care screening for sleep apnoea with a chest-worn smartphone-based screening device and secure referral to sleep specialists
Julien FAVIER, Justine FRIJA and Guillaume CATHELAIN
Primary care must quickly identify patients with obstructive or central sleep apnoea and organise a secure, guideline-aligned referral pathway. A chest-worn, smartphone-based screening device (class IIa medical device) coupled with a fully digital prescriber web-platform returns validated AHI metrics (overall and by type), positional analysis, event timeline and signal-quality flags, together with integrated onboarding questionnaires. This 60-minute workshop trains GPs to prescribe the system, teach correct phone placement, interpret AHI reports, and prepare and send a complete, secure referral to a sleep physician.By the end of the workshop participants will be able to: Prescribe and use the prescriber web-platform. Teach patients correct phone placement and onboarding to ensure valid recordings. Interpret the device outputs (overall AHI, obstructive vs central, positional data, quality flags) and triage urgency. Prepare and transmit a concise, secure referral pack to a sleep physician following regulatory and data-protection requirements.Brief clinical framing, live platform demonstration, hands-on role-play (GP as prescriber, peer as patient), decision flowchart exercise and real-time preparation and sending of a referral. Session ends after confirmed transmission to the sleep physician. 0–5′ objectives & regulatory points 5–15′ clinical thresholds & red flags 15–30′ live demo 30–50′ guided role-play and referral preparation/sending 50–60′ plenary: flowchart, checklist, Q&A.GPs leave with a one-page protocol and flowchart, a referral template, and practical skills to run the screening workflow and safely refer patients.By the end of this workshop, participants are able to screen suspected sleep apnoea efficiently in primary care, using a chest-worn, smartphone-based medical device and a secure digital platform. They can ensure valid recordings, interpret AHI-based results, triage urgency, and identify red flags, and send a complete, secure referral to a sleep specialist. This workflow strengthens the GP’s gatekeeping role, reduces delays to diagnosis, and improves coordination between primary and specialist care.
