Undesired loneliness remains under-addressed in primary care, yet family physicians are seeing more patients who use AI applications for companionship and emotional support. Millions of patients worldwide now form relationships with AI chatbots and virtual companions, often without telling their healthcare providers. This raises critical questions: Are patients replacing human connection with AI relationships? Should we screen for AI companion use? Can these tools help treat loneliness, or do they represent harmful social withdrawal? This workshop provides evidence-based insights to address this clinical challenge.- Assess and identify: Recognize patterns of AI companion use among lonely patients and distinguish beneficial from harmful presentations – Apply evidence: Evaluate current research on mental and physical health impacts of AI companionship – Screen effectively: Add practical questions about AI companion use to routine patient encounters – Develop interventions: Create patient-centered approaches for discussing AI relationships and provide appropriate referrals when use becomes problematic.Introduction and framework (10 min): Overview of AI companions in patient care and learning objectives. Recognition through cases (15 min): Interactive scenarios to identify beneficial versus harmful use patterns. Evidence review (10 min): Current research on health impacts and clinical implications. Practical application (15 min): Develop screening questions and conversation frameworks for patient encounters. Closing (10 min): Key takeaways, referral resources, and questions.Participants will leave with: – Assessment skills: Practical screening questions to identify patients who may benefit from or be harmed by AI companion use. – Clinical framework: Evidence-based understanding and decision-making strategies for addressing AI relationships in patient care. – Therapeutic approaches: Strategies for conversations about digital companionship and recognition of problematic dependency. – Intervention capacity: Awareness of referral resources and appropriate interventions for loneliness-related concerns. As AI technologies increasingly affect patients' emotional experiences, family physicians must understand how AI companionship affects health outcomes and therapeutic relationships. This workshop offers evidence-informed exploration of AI companionship as both a potential tool and clinical concern. Participants will gain practical skills to assess loneliness, provide appropriate guidance, and ensure digital relationships complement rather than replace human connection and professional care.
