Participatory approaches include communities and those working with them in this process, promoting active engagement, shared decision-making, and equity in knowledge generation. Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement and participatory methods are increasingly recognised as valuable tools in general practice service design, research, and training. Their importance is evident in healthcare, where collaboration between patients and professionals are central to improving outcomes.  ​​​​However, many primary care clinicians, educators, and researchers lack confidence in applying this approach, often compounded by structural barriers such as limited time, resources and institutional support. Common concerns include loss of control, added workload, acknowledging the ‘unknown’, and fear of tokenism or failure.- Understand the principles and spectrum of participatory approaches, including the “ladder of participation.”  – Understand how to overcome barriers to participatory approaches and build confidence in using them.  – Share and learn from real-world examples – Co-design practical, context-specific strategies and solutions to applying participatory approaches in primary careMethods A highly interactive workshop, led by experienced facilitators comprising brief presentations, small group exercise, world café, short video, Schedule Introduction (10 mins): Overview of participatory principles and ladder of participation.   Group Activity (15 mins): Using participatory facilitation techniques (world café) as a method to support teaching of participatory approaches, participants will discuss barriers and concerns to using participatory approaches in general practice, and reflect on past experiences Best Practice Sharing (10 mins): Facilitators will present case examples, and we will showcase a pre-recorded ‘myth-buster’ video with patient co-facilitators.  Co-Design Activity (20 mins): In small groups, attendees will co-design realistic strategies and tools to overcome barriers and apply participatory methods  Summary (5 mins): Key messages gathered interactively, and shared back to the group. We will also showcase the City St George’s, Participatory Research Hub resource.Attendees will better understand participatory approaches, and identify practical ways to use these to enhance engagement, relevance, and impact across general practice, research and educational settings.This workshop will enable attendees to explore the relevance and value of participatory approaches in primary care research and practice, and develop confidence, ideas and solutions to apply to their own context.
