Knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding solar risk among photo-exposed workers or leisure and sport pratitioners in La Réunion and Mayotte during the 2023–2024 period.

Sun exposure is a major risk factor for skin cancers and eye diseases. XXX are undergoing extreme levels of ultraviolet radiation.The aim of this study was to describe the knowledge, attitude and practices of outdoor workers or leisure and sport practitioners regarding the risks associated with sun exposure.The cross-sectional, descriptive, multicenter study focused on volunteers’ workers more than 2 hours per day outdoors or leisure and sports participants practicing more than 4 hours per week. They answered a questionnaire.A total of 529 workers (W) and 532 leisure and sports participants (SP) were included between 2023 and 2024. Most were men (73.3%), with a mean age of 39 years. The II and III phototype were dominant in XXX and V and VI in XXX. The mean knowledge score was 16.2/20 (± 3.87), with more than half scoring > 15/20 for SP. Concerning W, a difference of knowledge score were observed between XXX and XXX. The mean behavior score was between 9,17/20 +/- 3,83 in XXX and 11.0/20 ± 4.4 in XXX. Half of the respondents reported not using sunscreen. Only trousers exceeded 50% in systematic use for workers on both XXX, and glasses in XXX. The average number of hours spent at work or for leisure in the sun in our study is between 7.0 h +/- 8.3 and 8.26 h +/- 2.59. They reported sunburn affecting more than a third of sports and leisure participants and up to 50% of workers in XXX.The recruitment method without random selection from the general population is the main selection bias. Collecting data via self-administered questionnaires exposes respondents to reporting bias, particularly social desirability bias. The study is based on a large sample size, the knowledge assessment questionnaire had already been used in 4 previous studies proving its reliability and feasibility.Although overall knowledge levels were good, photoprotection behaviors remained inadequate among sun-exposed workers or leisure and sport pratitioners in XXX. Disparities by education level and occupational sector emphasize the need for strengthened, targeted prevention strategies, engaging general practitioners, occupational health services and sport leagues in promoting effective photoprotection practices.

Health literacy and sun protection behaviours in parents of young children: a primary care based study.

According to GLOBOCAN 2022 data, the fifth most common cancer type worldwide is non-melanoma skin cancer, while melanoma ranks 17th. Exposure to the sun during childhood is also a factor that significantly increases the risk of skin cancer in adulthood. Parents’ health literacy plays a crucial role in adopting and developing protective health behaviors. In family medicine, assessing this relationship in primary care is essential for strengthening preventive practices and developing effective risk reduction strategies.The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between the health literacy levels of parents with children aged 0-10 years and their sun protection behaviors, and to identify the sociodemographic factors that influence this relationship.This quantitative study was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional correlational study. It was approved by the Local Ethics Committee of Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine (Decision No: 2025/531, Date: 09.09.2025). The study population consists of parents with children aged 0–10 years who visited the family medicine outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Konya, Turkey. The sample size was calculated to be at least 139 participants. Data collection tools included a sociodemographic information form prepared by the researcher, a sun protection behavior scale, a Fitzpatrick skin type scale, and a health literacy scale-short form. All data will be evaluated using the SPSS version 21.0.Data collection phase is currently ongoing. The direction and magnitude of the relationship between health literacy and sun protection behaviours will be analysed. The results are expected to contribute to the planning of sun protection education in family medicine practices and the development of methods to increase health literacy. At the same time, it will enhance awareness on this issue and increase the attention and sensitivity of primary care physicians in accordance with the first contact principle.

Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Dermoscopy for Melanoma Diagnosis in Primary Care: An Evidence-Based Review

Dermoscopy is an essential tool for melanoma detection, and recent progress in artificial intelligence has led to the development of automated diagnostic systems that may complement or even substitute traditional evaluations by dermatologists. In Primary Care, Family Physicians are often the first professionals to assess patients with atypical nevi or suspicious skin changes, placing them in a central role for early detection and prevention.To assess the evidence on the use of AI-based dermoscopy for melanoma screening and diagnosis compared with dermatologists.Evidence-based databases—PubMed, BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, Laurier and Omni Library, NICE, and The Cochrane Library—were searched for systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, and comparative studies published from 2015 to 2025 in English or Portuguese. The MeSH terms dermoscopy, artificial intelligence, and melanoma were used. Exclusion criteria were duplicate articles, inaccessible full texts, absence of comparison with dermatologists, lack of melanoma assessment, and non-original content such as editorials, letters, or opinion pieces.Among the 61 records screened, studies consistently reported high concordance rates between AI-assisted dermoscopy and dermatologist diagnoses, with some evidence indicating comparable or even superior sensitivity and specificity. AI tools demonstrated potential to improve diagnostic efficiency and support clinical decision-making, particularly in resource-limited settings. However, variability in algorithms and study designs highlights the need for standardized evaluation frameworksMost studies report high concordance rates between AI-assisted tools and dermatologist diagnoses, with some algorithms demonstrating comparable or superior sensitivity and specificity. These findings suggest that AI may enhance early melanoma detection and support Family Physicians in managing skin lesions at the point of care. Nonetheless, limitations persist, including heterogeneity in algorithm performance, differences in study designs, and concerns regarding external validity. Further research is required to clarify reliability across diverse populations and clinical settings.AI-based dermoscopy shows high accuracy for melanoma detection, offering Family Physicians improved diagnostic capabilities, greater accessibility, and potential cost savings by reducing unnecessary referrals and optimizing resource use in primary care.

Dermoscopy Accuracy in Family Medicine: Comparison With Dermatology and Histopathology

Accurate diagnosis of skin lesions is vital for effective patient management. Integrating clinical evaluation, dermoscopy, and histopathology improves diagnostic precision. This study evaluates the concordance between these modalities in a cohort presenting multiple concurrent skin lesions at 84 patients during 2 year period.From September 2023 to August 2025, 84 patients underwent dermoscopic evaluation. Lesions were assessed under polarized and non-polarized light using pattern analysis and the 7-point checklist. Excision was performed for lesions with malignant dermoscopic criteria. Clinical andor dermoscopic uncertain diagnoses were confirmed by histopathological examination, the gold standard. Data cleaning standardized terminology, and lesion combinations per patient were assessed.Histological confirmation remains essential, especially in ambiguous or coexisting lesions, ensuring accurate malignancy detection and appropriate management. Combined dermoscopic and histological approaches reduce diagnostic errors.The findings support existing literature reporting strong diagnostic concordance, emphasizing histopathology’s pivotal role (Ziajka et al., 2018; Lee et al., 2022). The study also highlights the prevalence of multiple lesion types per patient, necessitating comprehensive diagnostic evaluation for high clinical trustworthiness.Confirming dermatological diagnoses through histopathology alongside dermoscopy enhances diagnostic confidence and patient outcomes. This integrative approach should be standard in dermatology practice and research to ensure precise disease classification and guide treatment effectively.  Dermoscopy achieved high diagnostic concordance with histopathology and effectively guided lesion management. Integration of dermoscopy with selective excision and follow-up enhances diagnostic accuracy and patient safety in routine family medicine practice.

Cutaneous Melanoma Trends 2020–2025: Global Evidence and Mediterranean Challenges.

Background: Cutaneous melanoma continues to show a rising global incidence, particularly in fair-skinned populations and Southern European countries. Recent epidemiological reports highlight increasing trends in XXX and France, with shifts toward older age groups and greater diagnostic variability between rural and urban settings. Understanding regional patterns is essential for developing targeted prevention and early-detection strategies.Objectives: To review recent evidence (2020–2025) on global and Southern European melanoma incidence, mortality, and stage at diagnosis, and to identify knowledge gaps relevant to rural Mediterranean regions such as the XXXXXXMethods: A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science (January 2020–May 2025). Search terms included “cutaneous melanoma”, “incidence”, “mortality” Eligible studies included epidemiological analyses, registry-based studies, and major reviews published in English, Spanish or French. Data were synthesised qualitatively.Global melanoma incidence continues to rise, while mortality stabilises or declines in many high-income countries. Southern Europe shows a persistent upward trend, with higher incidence in coastal and highly sun-exposed populations. Several studies report delayed diagnosis and thicker tumours in rural settings, partly related to reduced access to dermatology and variable use of dermatoscopy in primary care. Evidence linking photoprotection habits, occupational sun exposure and melanoma risk in Mediterranean rural regions remains limited.The findings of this review confirm that cutaneous melanoma remains a growing public health challenge, particularly in Southern European regions with intense UV exposure and ageing populations. Although global mortality has stabilised due to earlier detection and improved therapies, the persistent rise in incidence highlights gaps in both primary prevention and diagnostic pathways. . Furthermore, few studies integrate behavioural and environmental determinants such as occupational sun exposure, photoprotection habits, or cultural attitudes toward tanning, despite their clear relevance in Mediterranean settings. Analysis of risk factors associated with the diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma between 2010 and 2020 in our territory: retrospective observational study of a 1:2 matched case-control type.

Introduction: Skin melanoma is a cutaneous neoplasm with significant impact due to its high metastatic potential. In our Autonomous Community, its incidence has increased by 3.5% annually since 2008, particularly among individuals over 60 years old. Our region experiences high sun exposure, an agricultural economy, and low population density, factors that may affect access to early diagnosis.population density, factors that may affect access to early diagnosis. Objectives: Hypothesis: The combination of high sun exposure, outdoor occupations, and poor prevention leads to the diagnosis of melanoma at more advanced stages compared to the rest of the Autonomous Community. General Objective: To characterize the incidence, clinical features, and factors associated with skin melanoma. Specific Objectives: Quantify the annual incidence (2010-2020) per 100,000 inhabitants.   Describe subtype, location, Breslow index, and TNM stage.   Analyze the association between sociodemographic characteristics and advanced melanoma.   Estimate the impact of recreational and occupational sun exposure.   Compare the diagnostic stage with data from our Autonomous Community. Retrospective analysis of melanoma incidence and characteristics (2010-2020) and a 1:2 matched case-control study. T Variables include: age, sex, municipality, profession, melanoma types, Breslow index, ulceration, TNM stage, family history, photoprotection habits, occupational sun exposure (>20 hours/week), sunburns before age 20, diagnostic time, and access to primary care. include descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, t-tests or Mann-Whitney tests, multivariate logistic regression, and conditional logistic regression by pair. Temporal trends will be analyzed using Poisson regression.
