Making Artificial Intelligence (AI) an Ally, Not an Autopilot: A Practical DEFT-AI Approach for GP Educators

During clinical placements in general practice, medical students increasingly turn to artificial intelligence tools to support diagnostic reasoning, information retrieval and communication tasks. This behavior often emerges spontaneously, without explicit guidance. For supervising clinicians, this creates both uncertainty and opportunity: AI can enrich learning, but it may also undermine critical thinking, confidentiality or professional judgement if used without structure.This workshop aims to:<br> • raise awareness among teaching physicians about the educational potential of AI during clinical rotations;<br> • introduce the DEFT-AI method (Discussion, Evidence, Feedback, Teaching, AI-engagement recommendations) as a practical supervisory framework to transform students’ unstructured use of AI into a safe, meaningful learning process;<br> • apply this method to a concrete clinical scenario to support hands-on understanding and adoption.The session will begin with a brief overview of the ways students may use AI during clinical encounters (5’).<br> This will be followed by an explanation of the DEFT-AI approach, recently proposed in the medical education literature, as a supervisory tool to help students use AI appropriately in general practice settings (10’).<br> Participants will then be presented with a vignette involving a patient, a medical student using AI during the consultation, and a supervising physician (5’). In small groups, participants will engage in role plays applying the DEFT-AI framework to guide the student’s use of AI (30’).<br> The session will conclude with a whole-group debrief to share perceptions and reflect on the strengths, challenges, and feasibility of using DEFT-AI in real practice (10’).Participants will gain familiarity with the DEFT-AI method, which provides clinicians with a reproducible structure for supervising AI use without requiring technical expertise and while preserving student autonomy. By offering a transparent and shared framework, the workshop demonstrates how well-supervised AI engagement can reinforce liberty in clinical reasoning, equity in access to learning resources and fraternity in collaborative practice.This session equips supervising physicians with practical tools to integrate AI into a safe, reflective and shared teaching process. Participants will leave with concrete skills to apply directly when they next supervise a student or intern.
