Implementing Intelligent Automation in Primary Care: Transferable Principles for Reducing Administrative Burden

Primary care teams worldwide face increasing administrative pressure alongside growing demand and workforce shortages. Intelligent automation—often referred to as Robotic Process Automation (RPA)—can streamline routine, rule-based tasks and release time for patient care. This workshop introduces system-neutral, transferable principles for adopting automation safely and effectively in diverse international settings. Across many countries, clinicians and administrative teams spend substantial time on repetitive tasks such as filing results, handling prescriptions, routing documents and updating records. This reduces capacity for direct care and contributes to burnout. Automation offers a method for supporting overstretched teams, even in low-resource environments, by targeting predictable workflows that do not require clinical judgement. Drawing on practical implementation experience, this workshop focuses on identifying suitable tasks, preparing teams for change and establishing safe, reliable processes.Participants will be able to: 1. Understand the role of automation in primary care and its limitations. 2. Identify key criteria for selecting tasks suitable for automation in any health system. 3. Apply a structured approach to piloting and scaling automation. 4. Recognise essential governance, safety and workforce considerations. 5. Reflect on how automation could support their own local context.Short presentations on workflow selection, governance and international use cases.
