Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the epidemiological trends of meningitis in XXX (2019–2023)

Meningitis is a severe infection of the meninges, primarily caused by viruses and bacteria, characterized by high lethality and rapid dissemination. Therefore, it is a notifiable disease in XXX. In 2023, the country recorded 14,281 confirmed cases and 1,604 deaths.This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological data on the incidence and temporal trends of meningitis in XXX between 2019 and 2023.This ecological study used secondary data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). Incidence rates (per 100,000 inhabitants) were collected and organized into a time series, with emphasis on variations during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.The COVID-19 pandemic affected the dynamics of infectious diseases. Facciola et al. (2023) observed a 41% decrease in notifications during the pandemic period, including meningitis and tuberculosis. In the post-pandemic scenario, Bloom et al. (2023) reported a global increase in invasive meningococcal disease, attributed to declining vaccination coverage.In XXX, meningitis rates dropped in 2020–2021: a 57.6% decrease nationwide, 61.5% in XXX, and 32.6% in XXX. However, in 2023, the municipal rate reached 29.93 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a 148.7% increase compared to 2022. Kadambari et al. (2019) also highlighted the rise in viral meningitis after isolation, associated with the resumption of social interactions and reduced vaccination coverage.The decline in notifications during the pandemic reflects the effect of distancing measures, while the subsequent increase highlights the importance of continuous epidemiological surveillance, early diagnosis, and strengthened vaccination campaigns. Monitoring meningitis trends is essential for understanding the impact of health policies and preventing outbreaks in urban centers such as XXX.
