I’m a Dad, Get me out of here: Leadership Lessons from Parenting
John OKOCHA, Uwa IMA-EDOMWONYI and Lynda ODOH
Parenting is often described as the ultimate test of resilience, adaptability, and empathy. For clinicians and leaders, the unpredictability of family life mirrors the challenges of general practice and healthcare systems under pressure. Sleepless nights, competing demands, and the constant need to improvise provide a rich metaphor for the realities of modern clinical practice and leadership. This workshop draws on lived experience to highlight how humour, reflection, and storytelling can transform personal milestones into practical leadership insights.• To explore parenting as a crucible for leadership development. • To foster reflection on wellbeing, psychological safety, and inclusive team culture. • To equip participants with practical strategies for flourishing in uncertain environments. This workshop will use storytelling, humour, and interactive reflection to connect parenting experiences with clinical leadership. The format is designed to balance discussion, reflection, and practical application. Workshop Schedule (60 minutes): • Introduction (10 min): Keynote presentation introducing parenting as a crucible for leadership, highlighting resilience, adaptability, and wellbeing. • Interactive Storytelling (10 min): Facilitator shares lived experiences with humour and metaphor, sparking reflection on parallels between family life, general practice and healthcare leadership. • Small‑Group Discussions (20 min): Participants explore their own “survival strategies” from personal or professional contexts, translating them into leadership lessons. • Collaborative Exercise (10 min): Groups co‑create practical strategies for fostering psychological safety, inclusive culture, and adaptability in clinical teams. • Wrap‑Up (10 min): Plenary discussion summarizing key insights, with participants sharing takeaways and commitments to apply lessons in practice.Participants will leave with: • Practical leadership tools grounded in lived experience. • Enhanced awareness of wellbeing and team culture. • Shared strategies for resilience and adaptability in general practice.By reframing the unpredictability of parenting as a source of wisdom, this workshop invites clinicians to embrace humour, vulnerability, and reflection as pathways to stronger leadership. In doing so, it embodies WONCA’s themes of liberty through self‑care and resilience, and fraternity through interprofessional collaboration and shared learning. Participants will leave with practical strategies that connect the personal to the professional, strengthening both individual wellbeing and collective team culture.
