How to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence in the learning and teaching of humanistic clinical communication: the COGConnect experience
Trevor THOMPSON, Emily CANT and Monib SEDIQI
Humanism, defined as clinically excellent care that is kind, safe, and trustworthy, is fundamental to effective primary care (PC). High quality communication transforms clinically competent consultations into truly humanistic encounters. Yet opportunities for learners to practise real-world communication skills and receive feedback is educationally resource-intensive. AI-generated simulation offers a completely new way of approaching communication skills that is easily accessible and flexible. One such framework, currently in development, is COGConnect. Though AI-driven, COGConnect focuses squarely on trust building, psychological safety and patient centredness. Drawing on COGConnect, this workshop introduces PC professionals to AI-supported communication training, as a innovative new way to inspire holistic consulting in Primary Care.1. Describe how AI simulations can support the development of humanistic communication.
2. Apply prompt-engineering techniques to create (your own) novel consultation scenarios for simulation.
3. Understand the potential of AI systems to provide tailored and granular learner feedback.
4. Understand the particular contribution of COGConnect to communication skills pedagogyThe workshop uses mixed, interactive methods: Concept walk: participants are given concept cards and asked to circulate exchanging interpretations of the concepts to activate prior knowledge and prepare for collaborative learning. [doi.org/10.1111/medu.12688]
Demonstration: of an AI-generated clinical communication simulation and feedback.
Skill-building session: how to create your own simulated consultation using ChatGPT. Debate: agreeing key phases of a well rounded consultation that we wish students to learn. Presentation: introducing the COGConnect platform – integrating AI simulation with humanism.By attending this workshop you will: – Gain practical insight into AI-generated simulation – Understand AIs potential to deliver tailored feedback – Develope your ability to create your own AI simulations using ChatGPT – Gather awareness of the COGConnect consultation toolkit – Have your mind opened to a new way of commskills learningAI is rapidly becoming an integral element of medical education. This workshop mixes didactic and interactive learning approaches to help attendees grasp the extraordinary potential of AI simulation closely linked to an innovative and humanistic training toolkit (COGConnect). The workshop is recommended for anyone generally curious about AI and particularly those involved in any aspect of consultations skills training.
