How Should We Identify and Manage Elderly Patients with Nutritional Disorders?

In ageing individuals, changes in bodily functions and the body's transformation process begin. With ageing, a physiological decrease in food intake occurs. The decreased sense of taste and smell associated with ageing, along with changes in appetite, prolonged gastric emptying, and hormonal changes, lead to physiological anorexia and associated weight loss, which predispose older individuals to malnutrition. In addition to all this, the presence and severity of comorbidities also increase morbidity and mortality. Nutrition plays an important role in the health status of older individuals. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of nutritional status in older adults is crucial and  includes  clinical examination involving  comprehensive history and physical examination, psychosocial assessment, anthropometric measurements, biochemical indicators, diagnostic tests, and food consumption.In this workshop, we aim to discuss how to define nutritional status of elderly, how to manage elderly with malnutrition in everyday practice, assessments of daily diets of the patients, and  biochemical markers which are effective in detailed assessment and follow-up of patients who are at risk of malnutrition.In the first part, we will define the screening tools which can be used in routine practice. In the second part, through case discussions,  utilization of screening tools and  anthropometric methods, which can be used for nutritional  evaluations will be covered. In the third part, dietary assessment methods, and biochemical indicators will be discussed through sample cases. In the fourth part, experiences on managing elderly patients with unfavourable nutritional status will be shared and discussed.To learn about various nutritional screening tools to be able to assess nutritional status. To learn about practical anthropometric measurements and formulas to define nutritional status. To be able to assess diet  using different methods. To be able to interprete initial biochemical markers are effective in the assessment and monitoring of acute and chronic malnutrition. To manage the timely referral of the patient.In summary, initial assessments on identifiable factors affecting nutritional status can be conducted in primary care to initiate treatment and necessary referrals. Multidisciplinary primary care health professional teams can identify symptoms affecting nutrition that can be reversed and implement interventions in line with common goals.
