From Theory to Practice: Building Sustainable Healthcare into Medical Training

Katie BROWN and Aliki TRAIANOU

Sustainability in healthcare is increasingly recognised as a vital competency for future medical professionals. The General Medical Council (GMC) guidance underscores the importance of understanding the broader determinants of health, including environmental impacts, to deliver high-quality, sustainable care. Climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation are directly linked to the global burden of disease, making it imperative to integrate sustainability principles into medical curricula. This module was developed to address this gap by equipping students with the knowledge, skills, values, and confidence to tackle complex health challenges within sustainable frameworks.
