Enhancing dermoscopy skills in primary care: A practical and interactive workshop

Skin lesions are among the most common reasons for consultation in primary care. With the global rise of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, early detection is essential for improving outcomes. Dermoscopy has proven to be a cost-effective diagnostic tool that increases recognition of suspicious lesions and reduces unnecessary referrals. Evidence shows that its use in primary care can raise diagnostic accuracy for melanoma up to fifteenfold, highlighting its value for family physicians. However, many general practitioners still lack access to structured training. This workshop addresses this gap through hands-on learning focused on practical interpretation and clinical reasoning in daily practice.By the end of the session, participants will be able to: -Identify key dermoscopic structures and patterns. -Apply basic diagnostic algorithms to distinguish benign from malignant lesions. -Recognize common dermatoscopic findings in primary care. -Gain confidence in using dermoscopy as a triage and diagnostic tool.The session combines short theoretical input with active, case-based learning. Participants will receive a visual reference flyer. Interactive activities include image-based exercises, case discussions, and short digital quizzes (e.g., Kahoot) to reinforce learning.<br> The workshop follows the Kirkpatrick evaluation framework, addressing engagement, learning, behavior change, and clinical outcomes. Workshop schedule (60 minutes) 0–10 min: Introduction and overview 10–30 min: Interactive presentation of diagnostic structures and algorithms 30–50 min: Case discussions and image-based exercises 50–60 min: Kahoot quiz, summary, and Q&AParticipants will acquire practical dermoscopy skills for earlier detection of skin cancer and improved triage. Applying the Kirkpatrick model, this workshop seeks measurable improvements in both learning and clinical practice.Dermoscopy enables family physicians to make timely, evidence-based decisions in skin lesion management.
