Effects of artistic creation involving patients and health care professionals

The World Health Organization indicates benefits of art for human health. Multiple approaches are used around the world with psychological, behavioral and social effects, helping both preventing and treating fields. Public policies aim to promote the devlopment of artistic and cultural events in the health care systems.Describe the effects of collective artistic workshop involving patients and healthcare professionals.We conducted a qualitative study based on the model of research-intervention. We collected the feedback of the participants in a collective mural painting involving patients and caregivers (also with patient's families). The artistic workshop was supervised by a professional artist. After, we conducted individual interviews with participants according to a previous guide. Each participant gave his consent and anonymity has been respected. We get the autorizations from ethical local comity and the CNIL.Health benefits have been reported, with both mental and physical therapeutic effects. Creativity and imagination is a way of expression. The workshop gave birth to a fraternal impulse, sharing and social cohesion. It leads to the improvement of relaxation and well-being. This artistic collective experience reduced the anxiety relative to care, it helps patients to relativize and better accept the disease. It rise the quality of live at work for healthcare professionals. The workshop increased the self-esteem and the self-confidence of participants. It place humanity in the center of the care relationship.This workshop shows many positive impacts due to the strenght of the human relationship between participants. The collective creative project involving both patients and heath care professionals and promotes the empowerment by active participation. The collective creative experience allowed self-transcendence thanks to the sublimated energy. The approach combining art and care fits into this notion of global health that consider the person as a whole with their values and experiences. The approach by empathy in the "patient-doctor relationship" without hierachy leads to a true therapeutic alliance.This study shows that collective artistic workshop helps to creat a better relationship in care. Patients could improve their experience of the disease thanks to artistic expression. It could inspire other projects using art into heathcare.
