Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with a high morbidity and mortality rate, affecting 537 million people in 2030. Spain has the second highest prevalence of diabetes in Europe, at 14.8%, exceeding the continental average. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the many complications of diabetes.
