CBT in primary care: empowering physicians to drive mental and behavioral health change

CBT plays a vital role in mental health care within primary care settings. •CBT encompasses a group of approaches that focus on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.  •These approaches include cognitive therapy, which focuses on identifying and modifying distorted thought patterns;  •Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which addresses destructive thoughts and behaviors •Mindfulness and emotional regulation techniques;  •Multimodal therapy, which addresses psychological issues by considering various interconnected factors like behavior, affect, and cognition •Motivational interviewing can also be used as a supplement to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder • It is accessible, effective, and evidence-based. • Helps manage a broad range of common health issues •Promotes behaviour change- e.g. for substance abuse, weight loss and smoking cessation •Incorporates other models of CBT such as MI•  CBT is adaptable to short consultations in PC •  Enables early, low-intensity mental health intervention. •  Promotes self-regulation and empowers patients.PART 1: LECTURE Section A: Introduction to CBT in Primary Care •  CBT is structured, evidence-based, and effective in brief primary care consultations. •  Ideal for conditions like anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and stress. Section B: Foundations of CBT •  CBT Triangle: Thoughts ↔ Emotions ↔ Behaviors •  Directive and goal-oriented compared to humanistic or psychodynamic models.
