Various complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are allowed in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The Health Ministry, based on local experience, has financed a course of auriculotherapy – non-invasive, with skin adherent plant seeds – for primary care (PC) professionals, since 2016.The course is free and blended. The distance learning portion of the course (75 hours) is self-instructional, and in five modules: introduction; ear reflexology; auriculotherapy according to Traditional Chinese Medicine; auriculotherapy in science; clinical use in PC, and it ends with a 5-hour in-person practical lesson. Results from a 2023 research showed that 56.31% of the course's graduates practiced auriculotherapy after the course. The acceptance of auriculotherapy among users is high/very high (73.6%) and the effectiveness of the technique perceived by professionals is very high/high (79.72%).The course is innovative in providing contextualized rapid training in PC clinical practice. 25 thousand professionals were trained, working in approximately 50% of the Brazilian municipalities. Auriculotherapy became the most performed CAM in the SUS. There is no similar case to compare.1) Supported local initiatives can produce results on a large scale; 2) Professionals are open to learning CAM. 3) Some CAM, such as auriculotherapy, may enter professional training and on-the-job training needs to be disseminated.Do CAM have evidence of effectiveness and safety? Regarding auriculotherapy, good effectiveness is suggested by scientific evidence, although their quality is not good. This must be confronted with its great security, low cost, character of complementary therapy, additional security of auriculotherapy due to easy access, the longitudinality and biomedical expertise present, the great potential of its effect in most of the low gravity cases (greater potential for improvement due to self-regulation), the positive experience of the practitioners and great acceptance from users. This confrontation allows recommendations favoring the use of auriculotherapy in PC.The course is a successful case of continued education, which made auriculotherapy the most performed CAM in SUS. This safe, cheap and easy-to-learn technique increases plurality and can reduce the iatrogenicity of care. The course could be translated and offered outside of Brazil.
