Association between low phase angle scores and cardiovascular disease risk factors

The phase angle score is an indicator of induced resistance measured in bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), with lower values ​​indicating decreased cellular function. Currently, the clinical application of the phase angle score is to assess nutritional status, sarcopenia, and prognosis in high-risk patients, as well as cancer patients.This study was conducted to confirm the relationship between the phase angle score and risk factors of cardiovascular disease.This study is a cross-sectional study using 16,009 subjects whose phase angle scores were measured among the raw data of the 9th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2022-2023). After dividing the entire subjects into males and females and excluding subjects with missing values ​​for study variables and subjects taking medication for hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, the final analysis subjects were 3,280 men and 3,961 women. The correlation between age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), weight circumference, Body Mass Index (BMI), fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), LDL-cholesterol, hsC-reactive protein (CRP), and Serum Vitamin D3 and phase angle score was confirmed.In male subjects, a low phase angle score was associated with old age (Coefficient=-0.164, p<0.01), low BMI (0.139, p<0.01), high HbA1C (-0.064, p=0.016), high waist circumference (-0.035, p<0.01), high hsCRP (-0.005, p=0.026), and low serum. Vitamin D3 (0.005, p<0.01), high SBP (-0.005, p<0.1), low DBP (0.006, p<0.01), low fasting glucose (0.002, p=0.019), and low TG (0.001, p=0.017). In female subjects, low phase angle score was associated with low BMI (0.068, p<0.01), high weight circumference (-0.009, p<0.01), old age (-0.008, p<0.01), high SBP (-0.005, p<0.1), low DBP (0.007, p<0.01), low total cholesterol (0.004, p=0.008) and low serum vitamin D3 (0.002, p=0.005).In both men and women, low phase angle scores were commonly associated with older age, lower BMI and waist circumference, higher systolic and lower diastolic blood pressure, and lower serum vitamin D3. In men, they were particularly associated with higher HbA1C and higher hsCRP.The phase angle score is associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors. In clinical practice, the phase angle score can also be used to predict cardiovascular disease.
