Artificial intelligence: freedom, equality and the hidden traps in your clinical decisions

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already a buzz topic in primary care, promising help with triage, scheduling, diagnosis and paperwork. Behind the shiny promises sit messy questions about who is in control, who is left out and who takes responsibility when things go wrong. General practitioners (GPs) rarely get to analyse AI tools before they land in daily practice.Spot red flags and missed opportunities when AI tools are pitched to primary care. Use a short set of questions to test whether an AI proposal is safe, fair and worth trusting. Recognise how AI tools can either reinforce or reduce inequities in access and quality of care.Communicate concerns and expectations about AI with managers, developers and patients.After a quick, myth busting overview of AI in healthcare, participants jump into small group debate role plays. In each case one team plays the AI pitching company and the other plays management or clinical leadership, negotiating if, when and how to adopt the tool in contrasting settings, including underserved communities. Fast debriefs connect the debates to ethics, data protection and real world constraints. Scene setting and icebreaker (15 minutes). First scenario and debate in small groups (15 minutes). Plenary debrief (10 minutes). Second scenario and debate (15 minutes). Final debrief, key messages and evaluation (10 minutes).Participants will gain confidence in discussing AI projects and will leave with a practical checklist of questions to use when AI tools are proposed in their organisations. They will be better prepared to defend freedom of clinical judgment and equality in access when assessing digital innovations.This workshop invites family doctors to share doubts and experiences, to challenge AI promises and to imagine safer, fairer implementations together. It supports primary care professionals to move from passive users to informed partners whenever AI enters their practice.
