Artificial intelligence as a clinical assistant for family physicians

Family physicians work under high workload, time constraints, limited consultation duration, and sometimes language barriers, alongside extensive documentation requirements. These factors may impair clinical reasoning, patient–physician communication, and adherence to evidence-based care. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including speech recognition and clinical decision support systems, are increasingly integrated into primary health care to support physicians without replacing their professional role.Rather than viewing AI as an autonomous diagnostic system, this experience highlights its role as a clinical assistant. AI reduces administrative burden and frees cognitive resources, enhancing clinical reflection and empathic patient interaction.This practice-oriented reflective analysis describes the implementation of AI tools in daily family medicine practice. Audio recording of consultations enables automatic transcription, real-time translation, structured organization of complaints and medical history, and data entry into electronic records. AI also assists in generating a preliminary diagnostic plan, differential diagnosis, and guideline-based treatment and follow-up recommendations. Final clinical decisions remain the physician’s responsibility.The use of AI optimized consultation time and reduced routine documentation, allowing physicians to reallocate resources toward clinical analysis and patient-centered communication, including empathic dialogue and shared decision-making. Improved information structuring and collaborative decision-making enhance patients’ understanding of their condition and treatment adherence. AI did not replace the family physician but reinforced the human dimension of medicine—empathy, trust, and individualized care. Further implementation requires ethical oversight, data quality assurance, data protection, and continuous physician supervision.AI may become an effective support tool for family physicians by systematizing data, assisting diagnostic reasoning, and facilitating adherence to clinical guidelines. However, at present, the underlying algorithms used by different AI providers are not fully transparent. Therefore, it is essential to avoid excessive reliance on technology and to preserve physicians’ professional autonomy, as AI does not replace clinical judgment.AI should be viewed not as a replacement for the family physician, but as a clinical assistant. By optimizing time and human resources, AI creates conditions for deeper analysis of patient health and more empathic interactions, ultimately improving the quality of primary health care and patient adherence—primarily through the preservation of the humanistic values of primary care.
