Acupuncture in small groups: Optimizing time and space in therapy

Acupuncture is an advanced technique promoting balance and self-regulation by acting on the spinal, brainstem, and diencephalic levels of the nervous system.While integrated into Brazil’s public health system since 2006, barriers remain. Limited availability of trained professionals and treatment spaces, combined with the standard requirement of eight sessions per patient, results in long waiting times that often extend from months to years.To address this bottleneck, a group acupuncture approach was implemented, treating four women simultaneously in a shared space previously used for social activities rather than a standard clinical room. Patients lay on yoga mats while needling was performed, followed by two 20-minute stimulation rounds of different acupuncture points. This organization allowed for the completion of eight individual treatment equivalents within a single hour. The primary strength of this implementation was the significant reduction in time required compared to individual sessions, achieving measurable efficiency outcomes without compromising patient satisfaction.This experience innovates by shifting the paradigm from the traditional one-on-one clinical model to a collective setting. Unlike standard literature which often focuses on individual efficacy, this case emphasizes logistical innovation: optimizing time and non-clinical space to increase throughput. The approach differs from standard care by reducing the total treatment time for four patients from four hours to just one, demonstrating a 75% reduction in time resource usage.A key lesson learned was that the group setting fostered a supportive environment; patients encouraged one another to attend subsequent sessions, thereby naturally reinforcing treatment adherence. Future implications suggest that this model is adaptable; based on the success over four months, there are immediate plans to extend this protocol to a male patient group.The results indicate that high patient satisfaction and therapeutic delivery can be maintained even when moving away from private, individual sessions. The simultaneous treatment model addresses the critical "supply and demand" disparity in public health by maximizing the utility of the practitioner's time.By optimizing human and spatial resources, group acupuncture presents a viable, scalable solution to expand access and improve efficiency within public healthcare systems, effectively reducing waitlists while maintaining quality of care.
