A Seven-Year Journey of Prevention: Integrating Physical and Mental Health in an Evolving Employee Wellness Program (2019–2025)

Tayyabah USMAN

The evolution of Employee Health and Wellness Program launched in 2019 for early detection, prevention and management of physical and mental health concerns among full-time employees. Guided by emerging data and needs, program has expanded over successive screening cycles. To date, 3,674 employees have been screened.First screening cycle in 2019 revealed two major findings. Hepatitis C–positive employees were identified predominantly from housekeeping department, received timely treatment. This led to creation of a policy requiring universal Hepatitis C screening at pre-employment—initially for housekeeping, later expanded to all employees. The same cycle also identified multiple employees at risk of diabetes and hypertension, who were treated. Mental health assessment was introduced which helped flag early signs of low mood and stress.  In 2022, the second cycle included detailed psychological assessment. Physical health findings highlighted increased cardiometabolic risk with diabetes and hypertension. The mental health data reaffirmed significant stress. By 2025, the program expanded further by incorporating Coronary Calcium Scoring to detect subclinical coronary artery disease and prevent fatal cardiac events by timely intervention. Mental health screening was strengthened enabling identification of depression, anxiety, and stress.Confidential referrals were made to a dedicated psychologist, ensuring anonymity and help-seeking. Strengths of the program include progressive refinement, evidence-based expansion and treatment. Limitations involved logistical constraints and ensuring consistent participation.Wellness program combining infectious disease screening, chronic disease management, advanced cardiac risk assessment, and structured mental health evaluation reflects a commitment to inclusivity, equity and fraternity within the workplace. Promoting equitable health for all irrespective of job category or socioeconomic status to ensure employees feel valued and protected.Improving program regularly, continuous data monitoring, expanding services and policies as new needs arise. Future directions may include workplace resilience training, health promotion and regular digital health monitoring.Early identification enabled timely treatment and organizational policy reform. Identification of early cardiometabolic risks strengthened preventive cardiovascular care reducing fatal cardiac events. Combined with structured mental health assessments to support comprehensive physical and mental well-being among employeesThis program demonstrates how comprehensive, tailored wellness programs strengthen preventive care, enable timely intervention and support sustained well-being, contributing to a healthier, resilient workforce
