The Power of the recovery-supporting Network Intake in General Practice

Ana FAGGIOLI

In the Netherlands, access to care for people with mental health problems is under pressure. Waiting times for patients are too long, psychological complaints are medicalized too easily, and there is insufficient collaboration between different levels of care. National parties have therefore established an Integral Care Agreement with commitments to provide care that fits the patient’s needs in the most suitable setting, recovery-supporting practices with an emphasis on postitive health instead of illness, an integrated approach to psychological problems, and improved cooperation between general practitioners, mental health services, and social domain. Recovery-supporting care in general practice focuses on health rather than illness. This means moving away from the conventional medical disease model and DSM-based diagnostic thinking and instead creating space for the patient’s story and for what he or she needs to recover. The recovery-supporting network intake, developed at UMC Utrecht by Prof. Dr. Floortje Scheepers, is a powerful method that can be effectively used in general practice to gain a complete picture of the situation and the unique story of the patient and their context. Step by step, you work together with the patient to develop a tailored recovery plan, specifying which actor can contribute to support the patient. The result is increased patient autonomy, more collaboration and support from the patient's environment, greater involvement of the social domain, and referral to specialized mental health care only when truly necessary. In this workshop, we will discuss the strengths of the network intake in everyday general practice. We will explain how the method works, and you will have the opportunity to practice using it.With the goal of being able to a pply this new approach in your own general practice as early as tomorrow.  Distribution of explanation theory and practice is 20-40 minutes. Participants receive a handout containing the steps and explanation about the Network intakeYou will learn how to conduct a network intake with a patientWorking with the network intake is a powerful instrument with which you can help and guide the patient with mental complaints from strength and positive health instead of illness
