‘’Liberty, Equity, Fraternity’’ in Practice: A Gamified Workshop on Adaptive Leadership Styles in Primary Care
Ekin DIKMEN, Ezekie C ERNEST, Olaniran OYEYEMI and Sena AKYAR
Family physicians are de facto leaders of their clinics, yet formal leadership training is often lacking. The WONCA Europe 2026 theme; Liberty (autonomy), Equity (fairness), and Fraternity (team cohesion) mirrors the core tensions in clinical management. Physicians must balance these values against the harsh realities of primary care, deciding when to empower the team (Liberty), how to serve needs fairly (Equity), and how to build consensus (Fraternity), versus when to take absolute command during a crisis.1. Participants will identify their own dominant leadership style (Authoritative, Democratic, Servant, or Delegating) using a rapid, vignette-based assessment tool. 2. Participants will apply their specific leadership style to solve a complex ''Monday Morning Crisis'' scenario in a primary care setting. 3. Participants will evaluate the strengths and blind spots of each style to develop a "hybrid" leadership toolkit for future practice. This is a highly interactive, gamified session using a ‘’Scenario-Based Learning’’ approach. 1. ‘’The Leadership Compass’’: A 5-question rapid quiz based on Lewin and Greenleaf’s theories divides participants into four ‘’Tribes’’ (Commanders, Diplomats, Caretakers, Architects). 2. The Crisis: A standardized scenario (staff shortage + angry patient + administrative pressure) is presented. 3. ‘’Style Arguments’’: Each group must solve the problem strictly adhering to their assigned style's principles. 4. Debriefing: Facilitated discussion comparing how each style impacted Equity, Liberty and Fraternity. The total workshop time will divided to 4 component of the workshop.Participants will gain a clear ‘’diagnostic map’’ of their natural leadership reflexes (e.g., Commander vs. Caretaker). They will acquire practical strategies to toggle between styles using authority to manage crises, delegation to foster Liberty, and empathy to ensure Equity thereby strengthening professional Fraternity within their teams. We conclude that leadership in family medicine is the art of balancing tensions. Participants will leave with a practical roadmap to navigate these dynamics, ensuring that their leadership style does not just dictate, but serves protecting the Liberty of their team to innovate, ensuring Equity in workload distribution and strengthening the Fraternity essential for surviving the daily challenges of primary care.
