Emotional Competence in General Practice : A Practical Workshop for Everyday Clinical Application
Antoine CABROL, Alix FERNand-SCHERER and Lisa OUANHNON
General practitioners (GPs) encounter diverse and challenging situations that evoke emotional responses. When emotions become overwhelming, they may negatively affect the doctor–patient relationship, contribute to professional burnout and affect personal life. Given these challenges, GPs need to develop adaptive emotional coping strategies relevant to their daily practice. However, emotional skills remain insufficiently addressed in medical training. Promoting their development is essential both to support clinical practice and to facilitate their integration into medical education. According to Mikolajczak, emotional competence encompasses five key dimensions: identification, understanding, expression, regulation, and utilization. This workshop aims to strengthen GPs’ emotional skills by helping participants develop personal and effective coping strategies. It also seeks to raise awareness of emotional dynamics in the patient-care relationship, highlight clinical scenarios at risk of emotional overload, and explore the determinants of physicians’ emotional reactions. The workshop uses an active, experiential, and reflective approach structured in chronological steps: 1. Facilitators open with clinical narratives to introduce key concepts, followed by co-creation of group rules. 2. Participants engage in small-group discussions to explore significant emotional experiences and the factors influencing them. 3. Collective exercises promote reflection and sharing on the intensity of emotional expression in clinical situations. 4. Group work on coping strategies uses the Brief COPE toolkit, with discussion of the benefits and limitations of each strategy. 5. The workshop concludes with a discussion on acquiring emotional competence and the presentation of a practical toolbox. Each phase is enriched by plenary discussions and targeted theoretical input, following key steps of the emotional competence pathway: identification, understanding, expression, and regulation. This workshop is expected to help participants acknowledge the legitimacy of emotions in general practice, understand how emotional experiences can spill over into personal and family life, and reflect on coping strategies to support emotional competence in daily clinical practice. This workshop is designed to foster emotional competence in GPs, supporting the development of effective coping strategies in daily practice. This type of workshop may help prevent GP burnout and promote the doctor–patient relationship, with potential benefits for both practitioners and their patients.
