Creative arts can, by improving people&#039;s mental health, lead to enhanced sense of self-worth.Aim: to demonstrate how artistic expression has the potential to enhance our dignity and sense of self-worth. Objective: to inspire participants to engage with the creative arts, to the benefit of themselves and their patients, through their clinical encounters, educational activities and research projects.1. Introduction and scene setting (10 minutes): The introduction will situate dignity as an inalienable human right, and explain how creative arts can, by improving people&#039;s mental health, lead to enhanced sense of self-worth. \u00a0Research evidence will be presented, together with the pertinent philosophical, physiological and psychological pathways.\u00a0 2. Facilitated small group work to engage with four artistic artefacts (4 x 10 minutes = 40 minutes): Music: \u00a0A Case of You\u00a0by the Canadian singer Joni Mitchell (1971), from her studio album Blue; Painting:\u00a0La Columna Rota (The Broken Column)\u00a0by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1944);\u00a0\u00a0 Sculpture:\u00a0The Burghers of Calais\u00a0by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1895);\u00a0 Poetry:\u00a0\u00a0Der Panther (The Panther)\u00a0by the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1902-3), translated by Stephen Mitchell. Participants will be invited to engage with each artefact in turn. They will be encouraged to discuss their immediate personal responses and reflect on how each artefact might inform their clinical encounters. They will have the opportunity to share their own experiences of using creative arts in clinical settings, and to consider how artistic expression in its various forms may enhance their own sense of wellbeing, as well as stimulating and inspiring their broader educational and research activities. \u00a0 3. Plenary feedback and discussion of clinical, educational and research implications.
