However, implementing lifestyle change earlier can influence rates of osteoporosis after menopause. Patient perspectives are relevant in considering approaches to counselling perimenopausal women to improve compliance and thus overall bone health.This session aims to present perspectives on the methods and timing of osteoporosis prevention advice given to women in perimenopause, based on our experience in xxx general practice, by considering guideline recommendations and what patient and practitioner barriers to implementation exist. Reference to international guidelines will be included to support reflection for primary care physicians across continents.This session is designed to encourage self-reflection on possible change to practice and will be presented using mixed methods that incorporate: 1. Presentation of information on preventative advice from various guidelines that are useful to the family physician when counselling the perimenopausal woman on bone health. 2. Case examples with questions that relate to application of the recommendations from a practical, theoretical or patient centred perspective in the xxx general practice setting. 3. Attendee involvement in understanding patient perspectives on implementation of preventative advice using a poll participation method. 4. Exploration of solutions through self-reflection based on the barriers to implementation identified in the literature.Learning outcomes include: 1. Review the recommendations on lifestyle advice to prevent osteoporosis in perimenopausal women. 2. Understand patient perspectives and family practitioner barriers to implementation when counselling perimenopausal women on osteoporosis prevention 3. An approach to osteoporosis prevention discussions in perimenopausal women.In recognition of the barriers to counselling women about osteoporosis prevention earlier than the first fracture, this session is offers practical suggestions that incorporate evidence based knowledge and guidelines to empower the primary care clinician to provide up to date advice for women in perimenopause.
