Participants were randomly assigned to receive either Schisandra chinensis extract (1,000 mg\/day; 500 mg twice daily) or a placebo for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was change in the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score. Secondary outcomes included changes in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and inflammatory biomarkers (CRP, ESR). Safety was evaluated through vital signs, laboratory tests, and adverse event monitoring.In the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis, the treatment group showed a greater reduction in VAS than placebo (p=0.021), and WOMAC also improved significantly (p=0.035), with no serious adverse events.Eight weeks of oral Schisandra chinensis extract supplementation appears to be effective and safe for improving joint symptoms in adults with knee discomfort. These results are consistent with the traditional anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Schisandra chinensis and suggest its potential to support cartilage protection and joint function. The improvement observed may be related to modulation of inflammatory pathways and oxidative stress, although the exact mechanisms require further investigation.Schisandra chinensis extract supplementation shows promise as a functional ingredient for joint health.
