Emerging evidence indicates that FI may increase vulnerability to muscle dysmorphia (MD), defined as obsessive preoccupation with muscularity and leanness. However, the mechanisms through which FI influences exercise and eating-related psychopathology remain insufficiently clarified.This study investigates whether MD mediates the relationships between FI and both exercise addiction (EA) and muscularity-oriented eating (MOE). Additionally, it examines whether resilience, the capacity to recover from adversity, moderates these mediating effects. Gender differences were further explored to inform tailored intervention strategies.A total of 1,500 young Taiwanese adults (Mage = 22.2 years) completed an online survey. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationships among FI, MD, EA, and MOE. Mediation analysis tested whether MD explained the associations between FI and both EA and MOE. Moderated mediation was conducted to determine whether these effects differed by resilience levels. Gender differences were assessed via measurement invariance testing.FI showed indirect associations with increased risks of EA (\u03b2 = 0.431, [0.312, 0.563]) and MOE (\u03b2 = 2.3, [1.707, 2.887]) via MD. Gender differences emerged, with FI more strongly predicting MOE risk among males and EA risk among females. Resilience moderated the mediating paths between FI and EA (index = 0.066, [0.032, 0.105]) and between FI and MOE (index = 0.341, [0.163, 0.528]).FI may increase behavioral addiction and disordered eating through intensified body image concerns. Individuals with higher resilience appeared more attentive to their body image, with males emphasizing muscularity and females focusing on leanness. MD plays a central role in linking FI to maladaptive exercise\u2013eating behaviors. Strengthening resilience may help attenuate the adverse effects of FI in young adults.Food insecurity indirectly elevates risks of exercise addiction and muscularity-oriented eating through heightened muscle dysmorphia. While resilience partially buffers these adverse effects, the degree of body image awareness differs between males and females.
