While traditionally recognised in corporate settings, the concept is increasingly relevant to General Practice. Rising consultation demand, workforce shortages, administrative burden, and emotional labour place family physicians at growing risk. Understanding Karoshi within a primary care context is essential for clinician wellbeing, patient safety, and workforce sustainability.Help participants recognise early warning signs of burnout and overwork in themselves and colleagues. Attendees will reflect on subconscious behaviours, including co-dependent traits and the “hero narrative” in General Practice, that increase burnout risk. They will explore practical strategies to set healthier boundaries, manage workload sustainably, and foster shared responsibility, while understanding how clinician wellbeing directly influences patient safety and quality of care.Brief teaching segments will be combined with reflective exercises and facilitated group discussions in this highly interactive session. Participants will examine personal and systemic risk factors for overwork and burnout, using case-based examples to illustrate early warning signs and clinical impact. Promoting audience engagement through perspective-based questions, exploring how demographics, culture, ethnicity, and training influence work-life balance and boundary-setting. Discussing practical tools for boundary-setting, workload triage, and protective strategies at individual, team, and organisational levels. This session will also provide signposting to resources and encourages participants to reflect on applying strategies in their own practice. Increased self-awareness of behaviours that contribute to burnout and overwork. Participants will leave with practical tools to protect their emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing, reduce co-dependent working patterns, and adopt more sustainable approaches to clinical practice. Improved clinician wellbeing would positively influence patient safety, and continuity of care.General practice is losing physicians worldwide due to increasing workload and burnout. Karoshi represents an extreme, yet preventable, outcome of unrecognised burnout among family physicians. By creating space for reflection, discussion, and practical skill-building, this workshop supports clinicians at all career stages to recognise risk, challenge unhealthy patterns, and prioritise wellbeing.
