Common myths include, but are not limited to, beliefs that victims can simply leave abusive relationships, or that it only occurs in certain socioeconomic groups. These myths perpetuate stigma, discourage disclosure, and lead to inadequate identification, treatment and referral. Family doctors play a critical role in challenging these misconceptions by recognizing that family violence is a public health issue affecting individuals across all demographics, and by providing trauma-informed care that prioritizes safety and empowerment.This interactive workshop aims to equip primary care professionals with practical tools and insights to identify and address misconceptions surrounding family violence. Participants will identify and critically examine common myths that influence clinical judgement and patient interactions, understand the impact of cultural and systemic factors on disclosure and response, apply trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches during consultations, and foster a healthcare culture of empathy, accountability and advocacy.The session will use evidence-based, participatory methods. After a brief introductory session on common myths surrounding family violence, participants will break into small groups to analyse different case scenarios, with each group exploring how the myths influence responses and decision-making in everyday consultations, as well as discuss solutions and counterarguments to the myths. The workshop will conclude with a plenary discussion, where insights and strategies for challenging these misconceptions will be shared and summarized. Workshop schedule: Introductory session, followed by small-group discussions moderated by the presenters.
