The effects of adapted physical activity among people with disabilities (PSH) aged 18 to 59: a scoping review

May FIANI and Abdelhak EL HAOUARI

In France, the 2016 health system modernization law recognized adapted physical activity (APA) as a therapy in its own right. For PWD, despite the possible APA prescription by the general practitioner, access to sports practice remains a real challenge, due to persistent social, cultural and material obstacles. What are the effects of APA in PWD aged 18 to 59 found in the literature?Mapping in the literature the effects of APA for PWD aged 18 to 59 years.A double-blind scoping review was carried out using Rayyan software. She queried six databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Scopus, SportDiscus et Web of Science) on the concepts of disability and physical activity, from 2020 to 2025, for the population aged 18 to 59.Out of 9749 articles, 57 of them were included. The main effects observed were to improving the quality of life among people with disabilities. In short, it acts on several levels: • Physical (reduction of pain, better mobility), • Psychological (well-being, vitality), • Social (inclusion, interactions), • Functional (autonomy in activities of daily living).Strength: Prisma ScR criteria respected. Limitations: heterogeneity of studies, the under-representation of certain pathologies and the lack of standardization of assessment tools limit comparability. This review highlights the richness and diversity of APA interventions, confirming its essential role for the health, autonomy and quality of life of PWD.Despite the growing development of adapted sport encouraged by public authorities, APA remains insufficiently implemented. This review confirms the role of APA in improving the overall health of PWD, as well as improving their quality of life. The APA must therefore be promoted by general practitioners, and society must allow PWD to access it both in supporting the deployment of activity proposals, assistance with transport and the accessibility of structures. PWDs need access to common rights and full citizenship. The APA is one of them. An assessment of the specific needs of PWD to practice APA would be relevant.
