Evidence-based suturing techniques for primary and emergency care

Laceration repair is a frequent procedure in primary care and emergency settings, yet significant variability exists in technique selection, infection-prevention practices, and wound management skills. Evidence shows that outcomes depend more on preparation, irrigation, and tension control than on the specific closure material used. However, many clinicians receive limited structured training after medical school, leading to inconsistency in clinical practice and reduced confidence. This workshop addresses this gap through an evidence-based, hands-on session integrating current best practices, updated international recommendations, and practical procedural skills.Participants will: Identify principles of wound assessment, preparation, irrigation, and anaesthesia based on current scientific evidence. Select appropriate closure techniques for different wound types and anatomical locations. Perform key suturing techniques, including simple interrupted, running, mattress, and deep dermal sutures, with correct tension management and wound edge eversion. Compare sutures, staples, and tissue adhesives and apply evidence-based criteria for choosing each method. Recognize complications and know when referral or specialist involvement is required.Teaching methods The workshop will use a combination of brief evidence-based presentations, live demonstrations, structured hands-on practice on simulation material, small-group supervised skills stations, and facilitated peer feedback. Participants will practice suturing under instructor guidance, with real-time correction of technique. Clinical scenarios will be used to guide decision-making discussions. Workshop schedule (60 minutes) 0–5 min: Introduction, evidence overview, objectives. 5–15 min: Wound assessment, irrigation, anaesthesia, infection-prevention. 15–25 min: Technique selection, suture materials, closure methods. 25–45 min: Hands-on skills stations (simple interrupted; running; mattress; deep dermal/corner sutures). 45–55 min: Complications, pitfalls, referral criteria. 55–60 min: Key messages, evaluation, take-home resources.Participants will leave with improved procedural confidence, the ability to select appropriate techniques for common lacerations, and stronger understanding of evidence-based wound management. They will acquire transferable skills applicable across primary care, urgent care, and emergency contexts.This workshop provides a practical, interactive, and evidence-based approach to improving suturing skills in primary care. By combining updated scientific guidance with supervised procedural training, it supports safer, more consistent, and more effective wound management in everyday practice.
