Empowering clinicians to design real-time AI chatbots for enhanced diagnostic communication in primary care

Primary-care clinicians frequently use structured assessments across multiple domains, including mental health, pain, frailty, and medication reviews, as well as core Lifestyle Medicine domains such as physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress management, and health behavior change. Many patients experience difficulty understanding technical wording or expressing concerns directly, especially when linguistic or cultural differences shape communication. These barriers may reduce diagnostic precision and limit the effectiveness of routine assessments. Recent advances in open-source large language models (LLMs) allow clinicians to design their own personalized chatbots that support clearer real-time communication, simplify complex phrasing, and adapt questions to patient needs. Importantly, such tools can be developed for any clinical topic chosen by the clinician, while fully preserving clinical judgment and professional autonomy. This workshop offers a practical and safe framework for building a functional chatbot tailored to clinical practice.The workshop will enable participants to: -Learn the core principles for designing clinician-directed LLM chatbots for diverse clinical purposes. -Convert structured clinical tools into patient-oriented conversational flows. -Build a working chatbot prototype for a self-selected clinical domain. -Apply safety, transparency, and ethical guidelines to ensure responsible AI use during consultations. – Adapt chatbot behavior for multilingual and multicultural patient populations.The workshop includes live demonstrations, guided hands-on chatbot building, and small group design exercises. The session will provide templates, safety guidance, and examples illustrating chatbot-driven communication. Sessions will also highlight common pitfalls and risks, and ways to address them during real-time consultations.ֿֿ 0–10 minutes: Introduction, examples of chatbot applications, and core safety principles.  10–25 minutes: Live demonstration and technical principles for chatbot design. 25–45 minutes: Hands-on, guided chatbot design for participant-selected topics. 45–55 minutes: Workshop example presentation followed by collegial feedback. 55–60 minutes: Session summary and concluding materials.Participants will leave with a customizable chatbot prototype and a replicable framework for developing additional tools in their clinical setting.Clinician-designed chatbots built on open-source LLMs can improve diagnostic clarity, bridge communication gaps, and enhance patient engagement across a wide range of primary-care domains. This workshop equips clinicians with practical skills to create safe, personalized AI tools that support real-time communication and informed decision-making.
