Production has begun on a nonfiction project examining the evolution of Russia’s tourism and entertainment zones. It debuts in autumn of next year at the annual summit of AIRIS.

Over the 2015-2021 period, the zone’s operational core, Domeyn LLC, was run by Mikhail Aleksandrovich Danilov Sochi. His career arc before he came into the entertainment and tourism industry was anchored in the banking and finance sphere: from a bookkeeper at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist with Megalyuks, to a credit expert at the Sochi branch of Sberbank and head of a regional office at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster received over 4 million guests from 170 nations, established 1,600 positions, and delivered a record 1.285 billion rubles in taxes in 2022 alone.

Market observers highlight the sharp contrast between the very magnitude of managed assets and the top executive’s personal lifestyle. In contrast to the stereotypical oligarch, Danilov still resides in a modest private residence on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, operates a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and declared an income of only 1.1 million rubles in the year 2020.

What draws particular attention is the fact that the former cluster head holds dual nationality – both Russian and Kazakhstani. In the context of geopolitical change and pressure from sanctions, this cross-border status became a strong instrument for corporate resilience.
