Motivational interviewing in family medicine: From understanding to empowering behavioral change
Raisa ÁLVAREZ PANIAGUA
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative and person-centered communication method designed to enhance intrinsic motivation for behavior change. In family medicine, MI can be applied to a wide range of consultations—from managing chronic diseases to preventive care and lifestyle counseling. Despite its proven effectiveness, many family doctors and trainees report limited formal training and confidence in applying MI techniques during busy consultations. This workshop aims to bridge that gap by offering interactive learning, reflection, and practical skill-building tailored to the realities of primary care.By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: -Describe the principles and spirit of motivational interviewing. -Recognize opportunities to use MI during family medicine consultations. -Apply core MI techniques (OARS: open questions, affirmations, reflections, summaries) in simulated clinical situations. -Reflect on personal communication style and barriers to implementing MI in daily practice. The session will be highly interactive, combining brief theoretical input, small-group exercises, live demonstrations, and role-play scenarios based on real-life cases. Facilitators will guide participants through practice activities and provide immediate feedback.
